What are alcohol wet wipes made of?
Many alcohol wet wipes are made from a polyester "fabric" that is tear-resistant and lint-free. The wipes are then soaked in a solution of isopropyl alcohol and deionized water. The higher the percentage on the alcohol wipe jar, the more alcohol in the solution.
For example, 90% isopropyl alcohol wet wipes contain more alcohol than 70% wipes. However, 70 percent alcohol was more effective at killing pathogens than 90 percent alcohol. This is because the extra water in the solution helps slow down the chemical reaction. When this process is slowed down, alcohol can penetrate pathogens more thoroughly.
What is Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)?
Isopropyl Alcohol is a compound that dissolves soil such as: oils, fingerprints, flux residue, carbon deposits and more. Isopropyl Alcohol, also known as IPA or CAS #67-63-0, has many uses and benefits.
Since isopropyl alcohol is used as a solvent, it is very effective in degreasing and disinfecting surfaces. However, it's important to note that alcohol is highly flammable. People who choose to use alcohol wet wipes should store them safely away from lighters, candles, and other open flames.
